Holst, originally uploaded by rutty.

This Saturday sees our band Carlton Brass heading to Bedworth to perform in the Midlands Regional Brass Band Championships. We’re in the first section and we’re playing the rather lovely Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst.

This is my contest copy of the solo cornet part. You can even see my scribbles on it reminding me of key changes and required styles.

You’ll notice the “ppp” part in the second movement. I don’t think that many bands will be managing to play this quite that quietly – it’s a hell of a test of basic technique. In fact, the whole piece looks quite simple but there are pitfalls aplenty throughout.

Holst was a great composer and I’m chuffed that we’re playing this piece for the area
