Oh Noes! Snow!

Winter is finally here. For the first time in years Nottingham has had a decent delivery of snow along with much of the UK.

Heavy snow has fallen across large parts of the UK, disrupting travel and closing thousands of schools.

South-east England has the worst snow it has seen for 18 years, causing all London buses to be pulled from service and the closure of Heathrow’s runways.

The Met Office has issued an extreme weather warning for England, Wales and parts of eastern Scotland.

By late Monday, the South East could be under a foot (30cm) of snow and the North East under 20 inches (50cm).

A foot of snow! That’s quite a decent effort for these parts, considering that we’ve had numerous winters where snow has been a little on the shy side.

You’d think that we’d be able to cope with this little flurry of snow. Compared to most of North America this isn’t anything to be getting excited about, but it seems that there are schools, businesses and roads closing all over the place. We just can’t cope with snow!

This seems a little strange to me because they’ve been gritting the M1 nearly every day since September.

snowI had a rather hairy drive to work this morning. Our car had a little covering of the white stuff first thing (5am, that is), but the roads didn’t look too bad and it wasn’t snowing too hard. However, once I got onto the M1 things got worse and worse until we had near blizzard-like conditions in Leicestershire. The M69 was particularly bad – everyone had slowed down to 40 or 50. Everyone apart from White Van Man obviously.

Coventry, however, seemed to have forgotten to order the snow. They had quite a pathetic effort. Come on Warwichshire County Council – you need to do better than that.

It had started to snow properly there, though, by the time I left at 2pm. I reckon their delivery must have been delayed by the bad weather – plenty of trains were cancelled after all.

I managed to get home OK but there’s quite a lot of snow forecast for this evening. Let’s see if I can make it to work in the morning.
