A Canny Salesman

A young Geordie lad moved to London and went to Harrods looking for a job.

The manager asked “Do you have any sales experience?”

The young man answered “Eye, hods, I was a canny salesman back in Newcastle.”

The manager liked the Geordie so he gave him the job. His first day on the job was challenging and busy, but he got through it.

After the store was locked up, the manager came down and asked “OK, so how many sales did you make today?”

The Geordie said “Just the one, Marra.”

The manager groaned and continued “Just one? Our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale for?

£124,237.64″ replied the Geordie.

The manager choked and exclaimed £124,237.64, what the hell did you sell him?”

“Well, forst I selt him a smaal fish hook, then a medium fish hook, and then I selt him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was gannin’ fishing and he said doon at the coast, so I telt him he would need a boat, so we went doon tiv the boat department and I selt him that twin-engined Power Cat. Then he said he didn’t think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him doon tiv the car sales and I selt him the 4 x 4 Suzuki”.

The manager, incredulous, said “You mean to tell me….a guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and 4×4?”
“Nah, nah……he came in here to buy a box of tampons for his ladyfriend and I said……… ‘Well, since ya weekend’s fucked, you might as well gan fishing.”

More Christopher Hitchens goodness

I’d never heard of Christopher Hitchens until recently, but I have to say that I’m enjoying his little snippets of genius on American TV

He’s quite right to express his views as he does, and it’s to CNN’s credit that they let him on at all.

FTP is a dangerous thing

Please excuse the appearance of the blog at the moment. I did some “housekeeping” on my hosting last night and it looks like I’ve deleted some necessary styling files from somewhere. I’ve managed to reapply the theme but there are some CSS files missing somewhere – I’ll need to sort that out when I get home later.

In the meantime, er, well – the sun is out. Go for a walk or something ;¬)

It was an errant base-weblog.css file. I’d managed to delete it somehow and I just had to copy it into the themes folder. All sorted, although I do need to replace the image in the header.

I’m not trustworthy

Apparently, my own comments on my own site are now considered to be Spamworthy. I just replied to an entry and it got junked – my site back-end gave me this reason:

domain ‘davidrutt.me.uk’ found on service blue-search.net

So, either it’s having a bit of a brain-fart or my site has accidentally ended up on the list of spam-sites that Movable Type checks before approving comments. Great. Oddly enough, the previous commenter’s site also came up with the same thing, although other factors gave his comment a neutral score and it was approved.

Broken the Flickr API

You may have noticed that this site had an outage last week. This was a scheduled server move and my hosts moved all my files across to a new server. I then had to update my DNS settings for my domains so that everyone could see my site again.

This worked OK, on the whole, but I’ve found that I can no longer blog my photos from Flickr and I’m buggered if I can find out why. It’s the same with the automagic links posts I get from del.icio.us – they don’t work any longer either.

It’s weird – all my files are in the same place! The permissions are set correctly and the server has the required software installed for this to work. But, it doesn’t. Flickr thinks that I don’t know the path the cgi-bin – which I do – and my del.icio.us posts just silently fail to do anything.

I’ve been meaning to change the layout of the site for a while, and perhaps set up a proper photoblog, so perhaps this is a good time to do so. Expect some changes soon, and hopefully one or too more posts than I’ve been doing lately.
