The Matrix Reloaded

Guess where I was last night then? Oh alright, I’ll tell you. I was sat in the UCI cinema in Derby with my misses watching the new Matrix film, along with a packed audience and large quantities of popcorn.

First impressions were pretty good – the film opens with Trinity in her shiny black outfit, and that’s always a good thing. There’s a motorbike, some explosions, lots of bullets, slow-mo action and a little surprise. Then it goes a bit quiet for a bit, there’s lots of talking, some posturing and standing around in leather coats, wearing sunglasses and looking hard. My mind started to wonder a bit, naturally about naked women.
Then the film started to pic up – there was an amazing fight scene with Neo and 100 or so Agent Smiths – it’s absolutely outstanding, and totally cool when Neo starts swinging the pipe around, Agent Smiths bouncing off nearby buildings. We visit a really bad Frenchman. Bad in that his accent is truly awful, and he’s a bit crap. His wife his bit of alright though….

A lengthy car/bike/lorry chase ensues, and this is the highlight of the film – it’s worth the admittance just to see this. Stunning beyond belief – no wonder it took them six weeks just to film that one scene. Sadly there’s some pretty clunky dialogue to come and a truly baffling chat with some silver-haired bearded guy. Weirdo.

The ending is a bit of an anti-climax but leaves us with plenty of questions that we want answering in the next film. THe acting is as wooden as we’d expect from Keanu Reeves, but everyone else seems to have joined him in the same technique this time. There aren’t as many jokes as the first one, though there are some good lines, but sometimes they do talk a load of rubbish.

So, not as good as the first one, but still a top quality film. You have to see it for the set pieces if nothing else.
